When Every Move Counts


I was rushing around our home in Bluffton SC unpacking boxes, directing the movers, organizing closets, and rearranging furniture when I noticed that the movers had forgotten to unwrap shelves for my shoes in one of my closets. They had worked very hard and it had been a busy day for all of us. We were ready to see things come to a close.

The movers were on the way out when I raced after the men and reported to them that the shelf still had their blanket wrapped around it. I knew that they would need to put it on the moving van with them.

A young man in the group responded quickly, "Oh, I will take care of that for you. "We walked back to the closet together.
As he was untying the cords, he began to ask questions.

"So, I understand you are an author. "Yes," I replied. I have written several traditionally published books and quite a few self-published books. I am currently working on a new project."

"What else to you do?" he asked. 

"I am also a Christian speaker and Bible teacher."

He continued probing.
He wanted to know about every aspect of my work.
He continued.

 "I have read a lot. I have studied Hinduism, Buddhism, studied the Torah. I have an interest in all religions. I like to learn all I can."

"Well, that is all okay," I said.  "But Jesus said, I am the Way, the Truth and the Life."

He paused, as if he could not breath for a moment and then looked up at me with tears in his eyes. "My life has not gone the way I wanted it to go."

"Are you ready to change?" I asked. " Jesus will do it for you. All you have to do is follow Him."

We continued our conversation a few more moments and I asked to pray for him.

That precious young man bowed his head said yes to Jesus with just one shared scripture. Jesus is the way the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through Jesus.  He just needed the truth, not someone's version of the truth, just the simple truth. My heart leaped for joy.  I was so elated.

One more into the Kingdom of God! 


That young man could have been your son or mine.
He could have been your brother or your father. God is looking for workers in the field. You do not need a title, a ministry, or permission to minister. All you need is Jesus. He said, "I will make you fishers of men," even if your field happens to be in a closet. Every move we make counts.

            We have a mission?
            God has the plan.

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.

I suppose one of the hardest lessons to learn in Christianity is learning to give honor and respect to someone in regards to their position. Oftentimes, even in our church life, we will be intertwined with people in authority whom we don’t agree with, who don’t do things the way we want them to, perhaps we think of them as less educated or even as one who is not being sensitive to our needs or wants. Never-the-less, God’s Word tells us to give respect and honor to them as being the ones in authority over us in that setting and/or for that season. He also promises us that as we do this, at the appointed time He will raise us up to be honored and respected in the same way that we have given such grace. This makes me think of David. While David was anointed to be King as a youth, he was not appointed to be King until many, many years later. Still Single? What's Wrong with You?

I HAVE NEVER BEEN MARRIED, AND NEITHER HAVE I EVER BEEN DIVORCED. I Corinthians 7:8, " But I say to the unmarried and to the widows: It is g ood for them if they remain (single) even as I am." Years ago Elisabeth Elliot spoke at a women's conference at my church where I served as her tech attendant for speaking at the podium. In one of her sessions, I nearly fell off of the front row pew when I heard her say that she didn't care for "dating" and that it is a man-made tradition no where found in the Word of God. Suddenly everything I ever felt about this topic and the discomfort of the expectation of having a relationship made perfect sense and applauded the Lord and her for making my life whole at that moment.
