How to Read and Study the Bible: A Practical Guide

There is a silly saying, “How do you eat an elephant?”  The answer is, “One bite at a time!” The same advice is given when it comes to studying and reading something as important to your faith as the Bible.

Now, if you are a speed reader, you could probably commit your time to reading through the Bible as quickly as possible so that you can say that you did it. Many of us are not speed readers and this article is dedicated to those folks.

Below are some simple instructions to help you read and study your Bible that will bring joy and enlightenment to you as you learn the principles of the Bible that makes and keeps your beliefs and faith strong.

Note: The Bible contains words of life and instruction. Just like a favorite meal, the words are meant to be savored for your full and complete enjoyment.

  1. Pray. Although your day may start with prayer, consider the wishes of God as you pray and ask for His guidance on where you should start your study.
  2. Read the passage which you feel led to begin with. Read it completely through. Dissect the passage. Hi-lite the individual verses that particularly speak to you at that given time. As you dissect the passage (and it may take several days,) look for coordinating passages that will help you get a deeper understanding. Look for ways to apply your target passage to your life. Make it real to your everyday living.
  3. Meditate – When you come to the end of your study time for the day, pray that God will bring to your memory the principles of what you have learned. Make a flash card and stick it in your pocket or purse. Read the card throughout the day. Memorize the words of the passage. Meditate on the words and see what comes up in your heart that will make it more concrete in your very being.
  4. Pray – By the end of your day, your mind’s eye will be able to give you a snapshot of what you have meditated on throughout your day. Pray to God, thanking Him for keeping His Word fresh in your mind and heart. Thank Him also for helping you to live His Word.

I pray that this has helped you. Happy Studies! Please share as we expand in wisdom, knowledge, understanding, revelation, and discernment in the Kingdom of God. God bless you!

Why Honor & Respect Leaders?

I suppose one of the hardest lessons to learn in Christianity is learning to give honor and respect to someone in regards to their position. Oftentimes, even in our church life, we will be intertwined with people in authority whom we don’t agree with, who don’t do things the way we want them to, perhaps we think of them as less educated or even as one who is not being sensitive to our needs or wants. Never-the-less, God’s Word tells us to give respect and honor to them as being the ones in authority over us in that setting and/or for that season. He also promises us that as we do this, at the appointed time He will raise us up to be honored and respected in the same way that we have given such grace. This makes me think of David. While David was anointed to be King as a youth, he was not appointed to be King until many, many years later. In fact, from David’s perspective, he probably (at times) wondered if he’d even live long enough to see that prophecy come to pass. You se...

When Every Move Counts

When Every Move Counts I was rushing around our home in Bluffton SC unpacking boxes, directing the movers, organizing closets, and rearranging furniture when I noticed that the movers had forgotten to unwrap shelves for my shoes in one of my closets. They had worked very hard and it had been a busy day for all of us. We were ready to see things come to a close. The movers were on the way out when I raced after the men and reported to them that the shelf still had their blanket wrapped around it. I knew that they would need to put it on the moving van with them. A young man in the group responded quickly, "Oh, I will take care of that for you. "We walked back to the closet together. As he was untying the cords, he began to ask questions. "So, I understand you are an author. "Yes," I replied. I have written several traditionally published books and quite a few self-published books. I am currently working on a new project." ...

Still Single? What's Wrong with You?

I HAVE NEVER BEEN MARRIED, AND NEITHER HAVE I EVER BEEN DIVORCED. I Corinthians 7:8, " But I say to the unmarried and to the widows: It is g ood for them if they remain (single) even as I am." Years ago Elisabeth Elliot spoke at a women's conference at my church where I served as her tech attendant for speaking at the podium. In one of her sessions, I nearly fell off of the front row pew when I heard her say that she didn't care for "dating" and that it is a man-made tradition no where found in the Word of God. Suddenly everything I ever felt about this topic and the discomfort of the expectation of having a relationship made perfect sense and applauded the Lord and her for making my life whole at that moment. Everyone there, married or single, divorced or widowed, all came into hearty agreement as she dispelled some of the mess we have created by interacting dynamics of men and women outside of the Biblical way. She was a great proponent on the provid...
